Transformers Takara Titans Return God Ginrai Part 1: Godbomber

Godbomber doesn't talk
Takara's Titans Return Godbomber is one of THE nicest non-3rd party upgrades you'll find in the market today. A must have.

To the uninitiated, this is the Transformers Godbomber. He is the result of the "Bomber Project" and was created by humans who worked in a British Motors factory in Canada.

God Bomber was meant as an enhancement for the Transtector Super Ginrai - Optimus Prime -that would further increase his power and allow him to fly - who was getting his butt handed to him by the two Transtectors that formed Overlord.

Godbomber gained sentience when he somehow heard "The cry" in Super Ginrai's heart. Before that he was pretty much a drone.

MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Transformers Takara Titans Return Godbomber PackageThe Takara Titans Return Godbomber's blister pack is in Japanese, so we don't know what it says. The set came with a comic book that was also in Japanese which depicts a rather violent origin story for Godbomber - which includes Godbomber stabbing Super Ginrai in the chest from behind.

Kinda cool actually.

As with Leo Prime, Godbomber's Headmaster is not named. Speaking of Headmasters, anyone else notice how Sir Edmund Burton (Sir Anthony Hopkins) in that Transformers film that we wish to completely forget, refers to Cogman (Jim Carter) as a former Headmaster? At first we assumed that he meant he was a teacher, but in hindsight, given Cogman's size and the fact that he does not transform, Cogman could have very well been some Transformer's head.

WHAT'S TO LIKE ABOUT THE TAKARA TITANS RETURN GODBOMBER?

FIRST: It's a pretty good representation of Godbomber, and perhaps the first in our collection that one could actually play with - with some issues that we'll discuss later.

The original G1 Godbomber had hollow arms held together with pegs. Its articulation was limited to up and down movements. Xovergen gave us something with higher articulation and with greater detail - but was terribly difficult to transform and made out of plastic that personally feels brittle. Takara's Titans Return Godbomber is a composite: High articulation, strong plastic, easy transformation, but hollow on the inside.

The  original G1 Godbomber had solid legs pegged in place. They could turn but they could not move. Xovergen again came up with a solid solution that was difficult to transform. The Takara Titans Return Godbomber makes use of the very successful leg locking knee mechanism of the Combiner Wars - providing Takara's Godbomber with a high level of articulation and great poseability.

Now since you're going to wonder: You can use the Takara Godbomber's legs with Combiner Wars sets, but they'd be a tad short as you can see here:

Here's what the G1 Xovergen Godbombers look like.

Takara Godbomber's face is just as stoic as his previous incarnations. He's supposed to be a mindless drone after all and we really don't recall him ever saying anything.

SECOND: As with the Xovergen Godbomber, the Takara Titan's Return Godbomber's articulation is excellent - though nowhere near that of Xovergen's. Yes he can kneel.

Can you see me now Khaleesi?
We actually also don't remember Godbomber having a sword but it works. If you don't like it, you can slide it under his main cannon to store it - though this will interfere with its ability to elevate.

THIRD: Godbomber's truck mode is solid. A bit shorter than we think he should be - definitely shorter than Xovergen's Godbomber's truck mode (Which looks nothing like it should look like), and roughly the same size as his G1 verison.

Godbomber's nameless headmaster can ride the cannon up top - yes you can open up the canon. The "rocket" in the cannon by the way is not spring activated like the G1 GodBomber's cannon. It's just slotted in place. You can also store his "helmet" in the back.

Alternately, you can also pop the front of Godbomber open to reveal a set of mini-missile launchers and have the Headmaster sit comfortably in the center. He can be joined by two more Headmasters - just like in the cartoon.

FIRSTWell we're not really fans of the battle station. It's like: I've got all this firepower - missiles guns and a big-ass cannon but I'm sitting up front and center just so you know where to shoot.

SECONDAs with Takara's Super Ginrai, we do take issue with Godbomber being a Headmaster. Here he is in comparison to Ginrai and the PC-15 Ginrai.

THIRD: Godbombers' forearms are scarily hollow.

This particular Takara Titans Return LG42 Godbomber was purchased for PhP 2, 900 (Roughly US$ 58) through TF HK, a Facebook Group.

Stay tuned for Part 2.
